"Panther" fights off challengers overseas:Posted By: Theodore Taylor By Hy Hollinger LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - As the major studios prepare for the Easter holidays at the overseas box office -- with "Ice Age: The Meltdown" set to heat up business -- "The Pink Panther" again fought off a formidable challenger to maintain the international lead for a third week.With a $9.4 million weekend from 53 markets, "Panther" narrowly beat out the Spike Lee bank-heist drama "The Inside Man," which entered the international arena with $9 million from 16 countries, led by No. 1 bows in the U.K. ($3.1 million) and Germany ($2.2 million). The previous week's challenger, sci-fi thriller "V for Vendetta," grossed an estimated $5.3 million from 24 markets in its second weekend. Its total stands at $17.7 million, powered by the U.K. ($4.2 million), Italy ($2.1 million), South Korea ($2.4 million) and Germany ($1.9 million). "Final Destination 3," thanks to nine openings, scored $5.8 million, taking its foreign haul to $31.7 million. Highlights include $2.3 million from France, $1.1 million from Italy and $1.2 million from Russia. Once again, international moviegoers are displaying varied tastes as they bring diverse titles to the top of box office charts in different countries around the globe. "Inside Man," starring Denzel Washington, also took the No. 1 spot in Brazil and Taiwan; "Pink Panther" topped Turkey and Thailand; "Final Destination 3" dominated France; local title "Il Mio Miglior Nemico" led Italy for a third week; Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" was No. 1 for a second week in Spain; "V for Vendetta" took top honors in Norway and Finland; "When a Stranger Calls" led Australia for a second week; "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" ruled Japan for a fourth weekend and China for a third; "Eight Below" led Hong Kong; "The Shaggy Dog" reigned in Mexico; and "Match Point" sat at the top in Argentina. "Ice Age 2," as it will be known in some countries, will blast off in 29 territories as part of a day-and-date kickoff with North America. The voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo,Denis Leary, Jay Leno and Queen Latifah will be heard through the rest of this month and next as Fox saturates the market with "Ice Age 2" during the Easter season. The first edition of "Ice Age" took in $206.3 million overseas. "The Pink Panther" has reached $60 million overseas and has yet to open in Japan. In debuting at No. 3 in Italy -- following two local titles -- "Panther" took in $1.3 million. It has taken in $6.3 million over two weekends in the U.K. and $2.7 million in three in Australia. "Brokeback Mountain" remained the strongest of the Oscar-winning movies still playing in theaters, reaching $81.9 million after a $2.8 million weekend. "Capote," maintaining an art house release pattern, tallied $1.4 million from 37 markets to lift its total to $13.8 million. "Syriana" grossed $2.2 million from 50 markets to provide a total of $38.7 million. Other totals: "Narnia," $427.5 million; "Memoirs of a Geisha," $98 million; "Fun With Dick & Jane," $87 million; "Pride & Prejudice," $73 million; "Saw II," $64.3 million; "Big Momma's House 2," $57 million; "Nanny McPhee," $56.4 million; "The Constant Gardener," $45.6 million; "Underworld: Evolution," $42 million; "Date Movie," $21.1 million; "Firewall," $14.8 million; and "The New World," $13.1 million.
